In this series - I am experimenting with elevating simplistic cup forms by adding textured slip, background accents reminiscent of watercolor paints using mason stains , and black glaze pencil ornamental notes. The layering of these elements, along with the addition of more typical stoneware glazes, offers the introduction of background and foreground into an otherwise two-dimensional canvas (the outside of the cup). I imagine hot drinks being enjoyed in these pieces, though handleless. A unique piece of pottery can help to create intentionality and ritual into what might otherwise be an unconscious routine – that of a morning tea of coffee, for example.
